Stye | Causes, Treatment & Home Remedies

Stye is a small round, red, a bit elevated looks like pimple in the eyelid, it can be painful or painless. It is very commonly form and it will dissolve by its own within a week, or minimum 3 to 5 days. It is an inflammation of eyelid glands, reason for staphylococcus bacteria, sometime present with pus point.

Main Causes of Eye Stye

Uncorrected refractive error: If a person has glass power, he or she tries to see clearly by rubbing eyes frequently.

Eyelid gland inflammation due to unknown cause, gland secrets through eyelid margin.        

 Cleanliness: Hands should be clean, eyes have to wash before sleep and after sleep, skin condition of eyelids like blepharitis present.

Using of old makeup products and changing brands, better to stick one good brand, discard old makeups.

Are Stye Contagious?

Stye are not contagious, the main cause of infection due to staphylococcus bacteria. But it has a risk when stye people share their towel, hanky, eyedrops to others, direct contact of bacteria may cause of stye.

Home Remedies are Affects on Stye

Home treatments are very effective for stye, it will minimize quickly within 3 days.

Home Remedies for Stye

Warm Compress: Very simple way warm compress can dissolve stye, 2 types of warm compress is here one is dry, heat a clean handkerchief by heating a tawa or iron and press over eyelid, another soaks a clean hanky in warm water and apply over eyelid, do it for 15 min continuous 3 to 4 days.

Wash Hand Properly: This will help to reduce dirt contact to eye and to avoid clog the eyelid gland, contact lens user should be careful to touch over eye area.

Wash Eye Regularly: Clean with plain water and dilute mild baby shampoo in water, apply with earbuds gently in eyelid margin. It is important to clean any discharge, solid crust, pus over eyelids.

Make-Up: Important for women regularly replace your old makeup products, try to stick with one brand, do not apply eye makeup over stye, regular clean brushes, it can help to spread another area of eye.

Do not Pop-Out Stye: This is not like skin boil or pimple, it will increase the chance of spreading bacteria, it can be situated over gland so be patience and do not squeeze, it will drain or dissolve by its own.

Symptoms of Stye

Red boil type with or without pain.

Pain while blinking.

Pus point in middle of bump.


 Light sensitivity

 Solid crust accumulation

Drooping eyelids

Swelling of lids


Havyness in eyelids

Blur vision

Itching and watering.

You can get rid of stye within 24hrs – Over night cure is possible in primary stage if you follow this step, take a clean cotton cloth do warm as you can tolerate that heat over stye eye, apply hot compress over swelling area for 10minutes 3 to 5 times every day for 3 to 5 days and bit press the affected area gently to make unclog or open the mebobian gland(oil gland) of eyelids.  

Are Stye and Chalazion Same?

Chalazion is a elevated swelling bump grows middle of eyelid cause behind this is clogging of oil gland of lid, it is chronic case usually pain not present but may feels havy over eyelid.

Stye, known as hordeolum red sweellig, painfull bump grows at the edge of eyelid margine or inside of lid. It is acute infection due to clog up of oil gland caused by bacteria.

Treatment of chalazion is mostly same as stye primarily warm compress, antibiotics drops and ointment, surgery to drain the infected bump.

Stye Treatment

Home treatments is effective in early phase when stye is mild but if stye is not dissolve within 5days the always consult with doctor.

Doctor will check your glass power.

 Advice for antibiotic eyedrop.

 Antibiotic eye ointment at night.

Warm compress.

Oral antibiotic tablets.

Analgesic tablets if pain present.

If these are not working consultant may suggest surgical drainage of stye, this is a minor OPD procedure by local anaesthesia around affected area and make little opening, scoop it out. It will settle within 3days after surgery, also has chance of recurrence rarely.
